Stormi Henley American Idol 10

The night kicked off with 27-year-old dental assistant Christine McCaffrey, whose rendition of Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance" made the judges hope she would stop ... singing.

Thankfully, the next audition made up for McCaffrey's squeaky wheel vocals, two fold. Estranged former couple Rob Bolin and Chelsee Oaks impressed the judges individually, but it was their soulful duet of the Bee Gee's "To Love Somebody" that pushed the pair through to Hollywood. As Steven Tyler noted, "sometimes the deepest passion comes from friction." How these two fare on their own in Hollywood remains to be seen.

While Milwaukee gave us a Harvard grad/White House intern, Nashville yielded a former Miss Teen USA in 19-year-old Stormi Henley. Aside from her striking good looks, J.Lo wasn't impressed with Henley's "small voice," but Steven Tyler wanted to hear more of the pageant queen's "beautiful, tight squeaky little voice." We'll just leave that one alone. Suffice it to say, with a little pressure from Tyler, Randy caved.

As sob stories go, no contestant will probably get anywhere near the kind of response Milwaukee's Chris Medina received last night, but a few tearjerkers did come through the doors of Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, including 22-year-old Adrienne Beasley and 15-year-old Lauren Alaina.

Beasley, a young black woman raised by white parents, gave a performance of Lady Antebellum's "American Honey" that J.Lo "really felt." Meanwhile, Alaina, who was encouraged to start singing by her cousin Holly, now suffering from a brain tumor, made good on her audition with Faith Hill's "Like We Never Loved Before."

As for the guys, 23-year-old citrus farmer Danny Pate found himself singing along with Steven Tyler to The Temptations. And 27-year-old Matt Dillard, whose parents have fostered over 700 children, won over Randy and Steven with an unexpected rendition of Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up." However, Lopez passed on the country boy. But you've got to give credit to anyone who shows up in a cowboy hat and overalls to sing Josh Groban -- and Steve and Randy did just that.

And finally, if we were giving out the award for "Most Asinine Audition of the Night," Laytoya "Younique" Moore might just be a shoe-in. In fact, let's give her the award for "Most Innovative Spelling of a Ridiculous Nickname" while we're at it. Moore was beside herself when the judges weren't blown away with her screechy performance of a Tamia song.

While the Nashville showing may have been a little shaky, the J.Lo/Randy/Steven trio continues to gel. The real test of the Simon-less judges panel will come with the live shows. But let's just get through Austin first, before we start worrying about that.
